If your hair is long enough, you can donate it to charities that make wigs specifically for children with cancer. In the past ten years or so, however, a solution has appeared. For decades, this has been a problem (basically, since chemotherapy was invented).
That’s because the raw materials (good hair) are expensive and the labour to make a wig is intense (wigs have to be handmade). Wigs for children with cancer typically cost hundreds of pounds (or Euros, or dollars). Their parents have to spend lots of money on petrol to drive to the hospital, food to eat while they are out, and accommodation near the hospital so they can visit their baby and hold their hand. Many children don’t live near to the hospital they are treated in. This can either be as an inpatient, or, more commonly these days, visiting the hospital two or three times per week (or even daily) for treatment. Why can’t they just buy a wig?Ĭhildren with cancer spend a lot of time in hospital. This makes them feel very miserable and self-conscious at a time when they are already going through a terrible ordeal. They lose weight because they can’t keep their food down. These treatments make an area of the child’s body too toxic for the cancer cells to keep existing, so the child gets very sick. Why do children with cancer need wigs?Ĭhildren with cancer are often undergoing treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy. This is the perfect opportunity to grow your hair and help a child with cancer. Tie the hair in front of each ear into ponytails, and then tie the hair behind each ear into ponytails.Starting from this center part, part the hair over the top of each ear.Hair that is pulled into one ponytail or braid results in a loss of up to four inches of hair.Tie hair into at least four sections (six are even better) around the head for a more generous donation. Temporary coloring or highlights that wash out are acceptable but must be completely washed out before cutting.Hair cannot be permed, color-treated, or highlighted. Wet hair will mold in shipping and will be thrown away.Hair must be clean and stored/packaged completely dry. Stop measuring where the ponytail starts to thin due to layers or split ends.Start the measuring tape at the start of the ponytail.Pull curly hair straight for a more accurate measurement.We encourage you to wait and grow a longer ponytail (14+ inches) to have the most impact on a child in need.
